This study examines how elevated CO2 and nitrogen availability affect mangroves and salt marsh vegetation in the northern Gulf of Mexico. While increased CO2 promotes mangrove growth, competition from salt marsh grasses and herbivory limit mangrove expansion, suggesting that rising CO2 alone will not drive mangrove replacement of marshes.
